NightRest is a non-prescription sleep aid that claims to combine the “powerful properties of melatonin and GABA with key amino acids and soothing herbs.” Though both melatonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid are natural elements of the nervous system and have been correlated with sleep-cycles, it is unclear whether taking GABA orally can actually function as a sleep-inducer.

Though it is unclear the direct relationship that this pill’s formulators see between sleeping well and getting enough magnesium, gamma-aminobutyric acid, taurine, and glycine, the formula seems to be nonetheless a pretty good supplement and does include ingredients with a more direct relationship to sleep such as passion flower and melatonin.
NightRest Sleep-Inducing Effects
Studies on melatonin and passion flower have shown evidence to suggest that they can help promote healthy sleep cycles and generally improved mood and relaxation. Melatonin works as a naturally occurring hormone in the human body that is released as light levels decrease on the surface of the eye. This is assumed to be part of the body’s natural preparation for sleep.
Passion flower and skullcap are both herbal supplements which have been used for centuries among native americans and indigenous peoples for their anti-spasmodic and relaxant properties. Chamomile is also widely used, though studies done on its effects are somewhat less conclusive.
NightRest Possible Side-Effects
Interestingly, supplementation of gamma-aminobutyric acid has been associated with increased levels of human growth hormone released in the body. This is not necessarily an adverse side effect, but you may want to consult a physician before taking this product regularly. The other ingredients are generally considered safe, though caution should be used to take the product only before sleep and not while using heavy machinery or driving.

One of the best things about this product is the price. You can buy it various places online for as low as $20 for 200 tablets. Though the formula includes some ingredients that seem to have more to do with exercise and general wellness than inducing sleep, you won’t find many sleep aids that provide effective dosages of melatonin and passion flower as well as skull cap for the same price. An all-around good product and a good buy.
