Rozerem is a prescription sedative sleeping pill.  It is a hypnotic that purportedly manipulates the body’s sleep-wake cycle to help you get more sleep. Its biggest draw when compared to other prescription sleeping pills is that Rozerem has not been shown to be habit forming.

What’s in Rozerem?

The active ingredient in Rozerem is Ramelteon. Ramelteon purportedly mimics the hormone melatonin to induce sleep faster and control sleeping patterns.

Clinical Studies on Ramelteon

The biggest indication of whether a sleep aid works or not is how it fares in a clinical study. A  double-blind clinical study done on Ramelton did not produce great results.

After 4 weeks, there was no difference in the total sleep time between those taking the placebo and those taking Ramelteon. On the bright side both groups increased total sleep times by 40 minutes (but how much of this can be directly attributable to Ramelteon when the placebo group got the same results).

Rozerem is a prescription sleeping pill. Prescription sleeping pills have both pros and cons. The biggest pro to prescription sleeping pills is that a lot of money and research goes into the pill development.

One of the biggest cons of prescription sleeping pills is the cost. To get approved to be a prescription pill costs a ton of money. Because of this prescription sleeping pills tend to be very expensive. They also require a doctor’s signature (i.e. a doctor’s appointment). Anyone who has ever been to the doctor knows that those appointments are not cheap.

Yikes. This is a typical problem that is found in many prescription sleeping pills. Put simply, there are more side effects associated with them than positive effects.

• if you have liver disease
• children
• have lung disease or breathing problems
• are pregnant or may become pregnant
