What’s in Silenor?
Silenor (called doxepin) is a sleep aid that was initially used to treat anxiety and depression. Doxepin is in a class of medications called tricyclic anti-depressants. It works by increasing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain that are needed for mental balance. It is a prescription drug that can only be prescribed by a physician. It is one of the oldest off patent anti-depressants still on the market. It is not known how Silenor works.
In March 2010, the FDA approved Silenor as a treatment for insomnia. It is believed to act on neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers in the brain. The histamines may be blocked so you can get some sleep.
Silenor Side Effects
Silenor is not for the faint of heart. There are a whole lot of side effects that can surface when using this sleep aid. They include nausea, blurred vision, nightmares, drowsiness, dry mouth, skin more sensitive to sunlight than normal, changes in appetite or weight, constipation, difficulty urinating and frequent urination. It goes on to say there may be even more serious side effects.
They do not recommend anyone 25 years or younger to take this sleep aid. In a small number of children, teenagers, and young adults up to 25 years old who took anti-depressants such as Doxepin during clinical trials became suicidal.
Is Silenor Worth Trying?
Silenor may not be one of the best sleep aids on the market. For one, it was originally used as an anti-depressant which always comes with concerns. It may have some serious side effects associated with this sleep aid and it may not be worth the risk. I know most anti-depressants I am aware of cause people to gain weight. So now you may have sleep problems and weight problems. I know that scares me away. I don’t need to worry about ballooning up too.
