Those of us looking for good sleep know what good sleep is – not the tortured tossing and turning and also not the intense drug-induced coma that makes you wake up feeling groggy and disoriented.  A good sleep aid is hard to find without a prescription and even then you run into side effects.  Sleep Rx promotes itself as the “prescription” non-prescription solution to insomnia.

Sleep Rx Ingredients

The formula here is a 578 mg proprietary blend of:

• Valerian root (8%) extract
• Kava kava
• L-Theanine
• Ziziphus spinosa plant
• Chinese peony
• Melatonin

As this is a proprietary blend, it is impossible to say which ingredients make up the bulk of the dose or whether most of the ingredients are included in an effective dose.

Sleep Rx Sleep Inducing Effects

The first thing we noticed about this product is that it includes two ingredients that are somewhat “on the fringe” in terms of science backing them up.  Chinese peony has been used therapeutically for other purposes we know of, but not as a sleep aid.  Likewise, ziziphus spinosa has little if any evidence to support its being included in a sleep aid.

On the other hand, kava kava and valerian are excellent natural sedatives that can help to relax the mind and body to ease you into great sleep.  L-theanine is also known to help reduce stress and melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in the body that helps regulate your sleep/wake cycles.  (The company actually lists it as N-Acetyl-5-Methoxytryptamine – we assume to make it seem more original as its somewhat common in sleep aids).

Sleep Rx Possible Side-Effects

Generally this appears to be a safe formula.  There have been some adverse side effects associated with long-term heavy use of kava kava but it is impossible for this dosage to be heavy enough for that.  In fact, this dosage may not do anything at all since it isn’t listed.

Sleep Rx Overall Value

There aren’t a lot of reviews on this product and the formula doesn’t really stand out in terms of being obviously a quality and effective dosage.  You can find it for as cheaply as $12 online plus shipping and its retail price of $20 isn’t particularly steep either.  In conclusion, it looks as if you’re getting about what you pay for with Sleep Rx – not all that much.
