What kind of sleep are you looking for?  Cheap sleep?  Deep sleep? Long sleep?  Quality sleep?  The fact is there are dozens of different sleep aids out there which each offer a slightly different effect in terms of getting you in and out of dreamland.  Sominex is a very affordable product, but what are the other costs involved?

Sominex Ingredients

Sominex, otherwise known as diphenhydramine, is an antihistamine that is most typically used to treat allergies.  It has also been known to treat motion sickness.  It is marketed under various trade names, most notably Benadryl.

Sominex Sleep Inducing Effects

Many, if not most people, have taken diphenhydramine at some point for some kind of allergic reaction problem and noticed that it tends to make them drowsy as well.  It has been only recently that this product was approved to be sold specifically for the purpose of making you sleepy – changing what was previously just a side-effect into the “primary-effect”.

Sominex Side-Effects

Though one of the side effects of Sominex is obviously drowsiness, it has also been known to carry along with it the following issues:

• dry mouth, nose, and throat
• drowsiness
• dizziness
• nausea
• vomiting
• loss of appetite
• constipation
• headache
• muscle weakness

Sominex Overall Value

Sominex retails for around $5.50 for 16 doses in most places and is obviously about as cheap as you can get in terms of sleep aids (though if you consider that many sleep aids usually provide at least 30 doses per package, it’s not so cheap).  You can buy it even cheaper on a generic label if you consider that it is really just diphenhydramine (there are no other special ingredients).  Given that there are so many negative side effects and the fact that this chemical wasn’t even originally developed for use as a sleep aid, we recommend you don’t let the low cost be the deciding factor in your search for a sleep aid when your overall health may be another expense.
